What to Pack for the Sahara Desert

A practical packing list for a night in the dunes.

You need surprisingly little for a night in the Sahara — but a few things make a big difference. After guiding thousands of travellers, Best Sahara Tours has boiled it down to this practical packing list for your desert trip.

Clothing: layers are everything

The desert is hot by day and cold at night, so pack layers: light, breathable clothing for daytime, plus a warm jumper or jacket and long trousers for the evening. A scarf (or a Berber turban bought in Rissani) protects against sun and wind-blown sand.

Footwear

Comfortable closed shoes or trainers are ideal for the drive and for walking, while sandals are handy at the camp. You will likely go barefoot on the dunes — the sand feels wonderful.

Sun & sand protection

Bring a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen, plus lip balm. A small torch or head-lamp is useful at camp, and a power bank keeps your phone charged for photos.

The little extras

A reusable water bottle, any personal medication, wet wipes and a small day-bag round things out. Keep your main luggage light — at Erg Chebbi you only carry an overnight bag onto the camel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sleeping bag?

No — desert camps provide beds, blankets and bedding. Just bring warm layers for the evening.

Can I leave my big suitcase behind?

Yes. Most travellers take only an overnight bag to the camp and leave larger luggage in the vehicle or hotel.
