Best Time to Visit Merzouga & the Sahara

Season by season, when to plan your Sahara trip.

One of the first questions travellers ask Best Sahara Tours is simple: when should I go? The Sahara is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Here is our honest, local guide to the best time to visit Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Spring (March–May): the sweet spot

Spring is arguably the best time to visit Merzouga. Days are warm and clear, nights are comfortable, and the desert is at its most photogenic. In the oases the palms are green and, after rain, the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji even attracts flamingos. It is also peak season, so book your tour and camp ahead.

Autumn (September–November): warm and quiet

Autumn rivals spring for comfort. The fierce summer heat has faded, the light is golden, and the crowds are thinner than in spring. For many travellers, October is the perfect month for a Sahara tour.

Winter (December–February): cold nights, clear skies

Winter days in the desert are pleasant and sunny, but nights are genuinely cold — pack layers and expect frosty mornings. The reward is crystal-clear skies for stargazing and dramatic light on the dunes. The High Atlas may be snowy, which is beautiful but can affect mountain passes.

Summer (June–August): hot but doable

Summer midday heat in the Sahara is intense, often above 40°C. Tours still run, but they start early, rest in the hottest hours, and focus on the cooler golden hours of morning and evening. If you travel in summer, choose a camp with good shade and airflow.
